Most people are aware that the story of “Alice in Wonderland” is much more than just a few Disney movies.  First published as “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” in 1865, the story has been brought to film at least 17 times not counting numerous adaptations for TV programs.  According to Wikipedia, the story was written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pen name of Lewis Carroll.  It was very popular among children and adults including  Queen Victoria and a young Oscar Wilde.  The “Alice Books” which include “Through the Looking-Glass” remains popular among many who study the history, texts and poems for hidden meanings and symbolism.  In fact there are entire society’s of scholars centered around the study of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice Books’ as well as entire web sites dedicated to every aspect of Wonderland.

Talking nonsense is one aspect of the Alice books that people find fascinating.  The poem,  Jabberwocky, which is found in Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There has just enough sensible words to almost make sense and yet it is complete nonsense.  (Most of Lewis Carroll’s books are available under public domain and you can download the original Alice in Wonderland from Project Gutenberg.)

White interesting, most of us just find the story and characters fun and entertaining, which was the original intent when the story was made up to entertain Alice Liddell and her sisters on a boat ride.  I think the author would be surprised at how many ways his story has been told.  I wonder what he would think of our Alice in Wonderland Costumes or something like Sexy Queen of Hearts Costumes.
